I don't know, one would have to chase up NVidia to find out.  I can't
see any reason why an SMP kernel should affect how things are
implemented down on the GPU, in theory FBO should have less OS
intervention than pbuffers.  My guess is that NVidia has screwed up
somewhere along the line.
