It would have been possible if I had known that Don was going to pull
down the server. Neither Jose or myself was informed that server was
going down when it did so didn't have a chance to do anything. On
Thursday morning I just woke up and found things down without any
knowledge of what might have happened, its was only half a day later
did I find out that it wasn't just a normal server crash.
I can only speculate that Don pulling the server without informing the
OSG community was related to Don's long term unhappiness with me,
there wasn't any specific incident that provoked this. It turns out
that Don did warn the Producer mailing list, just neglected to tell
the osg-users, myself or Jose about it.
Jose and I had actually been trying to get the osg-users mailing lists
migrated over the past six months, and were waiting on feedback from
Don. The Dreamhost server was ready and waiting, with just the
domains to sort out, and histories and membership lists to import.
I regret not taking regular local backups of the mailman files, and
not warning the community about the possibility that Don might pull
the plug without warning. Of course the later might have prevoked
that reaction I was trying to avoid. Rather I made too many
assumptions, and took things too gingerly w.r.t getting things
migrated. In this I screwed up.
The damage is now done, just need dust ourselves down, fix what is
broken best we can and get on.
Robert.
