Visual C++ 6.0 had major standard C++ and standard library problems,  
but (almost) no one uses that anymore. Most people use Visual C++ 2003  
or 2005, especially now that a "free" (as in beer) optimizing compiler  
and IDE, Visual C++ Express 2005, is available.

In particular, in the docs on the OSG wiki, it's clear that using  
VC++6 is a pretty "involved" process (to put it mildly), so it's  
really easier to download VC++ Express and use that.
